about how awesome and complicated the relationship between Marco and his Dad is

because in a lot of ways his Dad is… not a great parent, but he’s trying, and Marco still loves him but that doesn’t mean it’s easy and reading that was a revelation for me as a kid

because i had to grow up too soon.

and those feels, Marco, man. i feel them

Reading Animorphs #52 (The Sacrifice) and Ax is giving me all sorts of feels. I dunno why people tend to write him off as a one-sided character when he’s easily one of the most complex in the group. He’s a poor bb alien stranded light-years away from his home and family and has to struggle with learning about humans and fitting in with the group, and in these last few books he has to decide who he’s ultimately going to fight for: his species, or the humans?

And I really liked his issues with Cassie in this book, because he’s always been pretty close with her. She invited him to eat dinner with her family (in Jake morph) and took care of him when he was sick, and she was probably the one he saw the most outside of meetings and missions (besides Tobias) since he lived so close to her.

can I frame this post and hang it on my wall?

Ax is so much more complex than he’s given credit for. I think that might be because it’s easier to focus on the goofball side of his character. The TV show pretty much completely stripped him of his depth and a lot of his ghostwritten books play up the humor. (To be fair, though, #28 is hilarious and there are some good serious moments in #38 and #46.)

And of course Cassie’s betrayal hits him hard. She was the first one other than Tobias to really try and reach out to him. And when Tobias isn’t around, Cassie’s the one he confides in — notice it’s her who comforts him after the Estrid drama. And not only does she betray the group, she betrays them by giving up the very thing his brother gave his life to protect.

But Ax is also the first one to forgive her. Because Cassie means so much to him.

And I think because Ax, more than anyone, understands that loyalty is complicated and it doesn’t always mean following orders. Cassie gets so much flack for giving away the morphing cube, but people forget Ax betrayed someone in every single one of his books. Hell, he’d JUST mutinied against Jake to save him from facing off against Visser Two. If anyone could get Cassie making a mistake to help Jake, it’s Ax.
