What If? (Vol. 1) #24 (What If Spider-Man Had Rescued Gwen Stacy?). 1980. Written by Tony Isabella. Art by Gil Kane and Frank Giacoia.
NARRATION: Later …
PETER: Your dad was the bravest man I’ve ever known. He saved that boy, but the rubble Doc Ock knocked off the edge of the building hit him instead. I couldn’t get him to a doctor in time.
GWEN: Did — did he say anything before he …
PETER: He called me Peter.
GWEN: But that means …
PETER: He knew who I was. He must have known all along, but he never gave me away. He asked me to be good to you. I promised that I would love you — and cherish you — as long as I lived. I haven’t done too good a job of that up to now, but that’s all going to change.
GWEN: What do you mean, Peter?
PETER: I do love you, Gwen — and maybe a condemned, out-of-the-way pier isn’t the best place to ask what I should’ve asked a long time ago, but —
This isn’t going too well, is it?
I guess what I’m trying to ask you in my typical stumble-mouthed fashion is:
Ms. Stacy, will you marry me?

a softer world #527 (peter version): i will try not to hug him too hard

I can’t say I agree. Peter loved Gwen before she died, it’s not like it just came about afte the fact. He really did love her and she really did love him in return. I still prefer MJ to Gwen, but Gwen’s role in Peter’s life shouldn’t be undermined.
And Gwen wasn’t his first girlfriend, she was his first love.I agree!
While, I don’t know if Peter/Gwen would have worked out in the long term if she had lived, I think the true/false love dichnomy is silly.
Peter “truly loved” MJ. He also “truly loved” Gwen. Shippers do not have to play a zero sum game.
